A Better New Year for Your Business

The day has finally come. The one you’ve been reserving for the commencement of your most important goals.
“I’ll start in the new year,” you’ve said to yourself, over and over. And now that that New Year has arrived – what is your plan?
2023 was a tough economic year all over the world, but it’s important to take a moment to reflect on what you got right, and what you didn’t. From your business to your personal life, ask yourself how you showed up in 2023, and what you can do in 2024 to show up better.
Have a plan
For most personal goals, we tend to set a plan when entering a new year. If the goal is to lose weight, we plan a workout regime. However, many SME’s don’t make annual plans for their businesses.
“Failing to plan is planning to fail,” they say. And this is just as true for your business as it is in any other area.

Imagine how much more likely you are to achieve a goal for your food business when you have one clearly outlined. Annual business plans allow you to set clear and specific goals for your company. By defining your objectives for the year, you provide a roadmap for your team and yourself to follow. This helps to align everyone’s efforts towards a common purpose and provides a sense of direction.
Strategic planning
Having a plan for your business provides an opportunity to assess your current business situation and develop strategies to achieve your goals. It allows you to analyze market trends, identify opportunities, and anticipate challenges. This strategic planning process helps you make informed decisions and allocate resources effectively.
Assess your 2023 performance on a monthly basis and use this to plan your resource allocation, such as budget, time, and manpower, in a more efficient and effective manner. For example, take a look at how your business performed in January 2023. What were the overall sales, expenses and profits? What targets and budgets are realistic to set for January 2024? How can you involve your team?
Working in this manner will allow you to prioritize projects and initiatives based on their importance and potential impact on your company goals. This helps to optimize resource utilization, avoid wastage, and generally make your plans more attainable.

Performance measurement
Set targets and milestones that will help you track your progress throughout the year. This will allow you to identify areas of improvement, celebrate successes, and make necessary adjustments to stay on track.
This type of detailed plan also serves as a great communication tool for your team and shareholders. It helps to align everyone’s efforts towards a common vision and ensures that everyone is on the same page. While many SME founders tend to keep their goals to themselves (that is if they even set goals to begin with), I have found it to be far more rewarding to make and set goals with your teams.
By sharing your business plan with your team, you can foster a sense of ownership and commitment, leading to increased motivation and productivity. This by default increases the overall likelihood of your business actually achieving the goals set.
Adaptation and flexibility
If the last few years have taught us anything, it’s to not expect things to always go as planned. Between the global pandemic in 2020 and the cash shortage followed by the Nigerian presidential elections in 2023, life can always throw a curve-ball.
While annual business plans provide a roadmap, they also allow for adaptation and flexibility. Business environments are dynamic, and unexpected changes may occur throughout the year. Having an annual plan in place allows you to be proactive and make necessary adjustments to respond to market shifts or emerging opportunities.

In Summary…
Making annual business plans is important as they provide a strategic framework for your business, help set goals and priorities, allocate resources effectively, measure performance, foster communication and alignment, and allow for adaptation and flexibility. By investing time and effort into creating an annual plan, you increase the likelihood of achieving your business objectives and staying competitive in a rapidly changing business landscape.
